I will have to concede that on rare occassions, painfully loud bikes might prevent brain-dead-cagers from doing something to endanger the biker. But typically, mainly, it is a lack of rider skill, and to a lesser degree poor handling and braking bikes.
Terry's assesment of squids I concur with, but I'm not sure if he's applying it to the other than sportbike riders (the way that I use the term). Squids with LAP's (loud ass pipes) can be just as uncivil as the cruiser guys, but I think, at least around here, that their contribution to the problem is minor.
But yes, Jo K, ask the Hardley guy with straight pipes, and I'll bet that 95% of them will spout "loud pipes save lives"
Terry, I wasn't sure if anyone on this board would understand the "real bikes whine", as much as I think the VFR750/800 is one of the best all-round bike engines ever made, I would like to have a Guzzi in my garage also. A long-time VF/VFR lover (also has a RC-30) picked up a V11 Sport (or whatever the year-or-two earlier equivalent would be), he loves the overall feel of the bike. I'll have a chance to ride with him in two weeks when 40-50 of us get together for riding in SE Ohio, Western WV. Some with stock pipes, many with aftermarket pipes, some LAP's most though, use some discretion and respect for others when they wind them out.
