The last great Volvo engine was the iron block and head 4 cylinder 2.0 and 2.3L 8 valve engines. They are essentially the same engine in the guy's P1800, but with an overhead valve design run off a Kevlar belt. You could get this engine up until 1995 in the 940. Turbocharged, it actually has great power! My wife's huge 940 Turbo wagon can launch itself at a green light with authority, and it currently has 110K miles. And it is smoooooothhhhh....
A fellow down the road has a '92 940T with 240K miles. He just had the timing belt replaced, and the compression test showed factory spec readings on all cylinders. So these engines were very well designed and built.
The newer Volvo engines are, FWIK, Audi designs. The 6 cylinder engine in the 960 and later S80 is supposed to be very unreliable and complicated. The 5 cylinder in the 850/S60 is basically the same engine with a cylinder cut off. They go for a while, but get tired at 100K, and aren't the same tough design of the old iron block 4 bangers.
