The metal particles are not left over from machining, I think thats even in the 'old days'. They are from the rings & cylinders polishing each other as they seat. I think the surface finish is better than it was 30 years ago, so less of this gets into the oil and the particles might be finer.
But I've also heard that the current philosophy is that the material which gets into the oil actually helps the polishing process, like the abrasive of polishing compound. I'm not sure if I like that idea, but I'm just saying what I heard.
