Saab Antifreeze, good stuff! Posted by Kevin K [Email] ![]() ![]() |
Just stopped by dealer, and confirmed they carry both blue stuff for older cars, and expensive pink stuff (dexcool/OAT chemistry) for mid '01 and later models ... all new Saabs now come with it.
The $8 blue stuff is actually a euro spec, with low silicates, no phosphates, and some special 'acids' as in the new long life blends. This sounds just like the $12 pale colored mercedes coolant that townsends recomends. One euro supplier of 'G48' coolant claims it is ok'd by saab and mercedes for all but the most recent models that use 'long life' coolant.
Saab's pink dexcool type ($17) is for new models, and very carefull multi-day flushes should be done to convert from saab blue or usual cheap US green/yellow stuff. Only then can the longer life potential be used.
---------------
The saab blue looks like a good choice for old saabs, and routine change outs, and should be equal to but less expensive than the mercedes stuff available in the US. Each is considered about a 2-3 year use. Even with 2 year change cycles, cheap US prestone has been known to corrode C900 saab heads.
For older models, an easy switch to long life coolant is to use the latest GO5 (hybrid-OAT chemistry) stuff. This is apparently readily available in euro, but in the US, only chrysler dealers carry the orange stuff as Mopar extended/long life ... its $13 in a black jug.
