It's a tossup between '86 and '90, in terms of overall bestness. '85 was kind of a silly car - all the extra weight of the body cladding with no extra power and no suspension. Supposedly the SPG panels do help top speed, but still... '85s also have the not-so-good version of LH and no side markers and the decaying wiring harness. They were cool at the time, but they just don't hold up to the test of time, which IMHO is a key point of *all* Saabs, and especially a c900.
The '86 rectifyed the wiring problem, got the suspension, and still had the old, cool snub-nosed look. Plus, I think grey was a much better color for the car...
In 1990 all the real improvements that needed to be done had been done, power was at its peak, and ABS and SRS were standard. Reliability was way up, fit and finish had dramatically improved since the dark days of the late '80s, and they went back to the old, great seats. 1990 also included much better sound deadening and and insulation, and the result was a much quieter car. The difference between my '90 SPG and the two '88s that preceeded it are pretty unreal.
