If you read the interview in the recent Nines magazine (if you're not a subscriber you should be), you'll hear the story straight from the top. Saab is NOT in the "retro" design business...
And I applaud that thinking...
Why? Let's consider the fact that old Saabs NEVER sold in great quantities in this country... 99.5% of the population has no idea what a Sonett or a 93 Stroker is.
Even successful retro designs like the "new Beetle" tend to wear off with time after the novelty is gone. Beetle sales are way off and they're resorting to gimmicks like flashy colors and the new Turbo model to keep people interested.
Also, retro designs are totally impractical for modern vehicles and all the amenities they must offer... Back then they didn't have airbags, crash protection, fancy stereo and navigation systems, automatic climate controls, cupholders, moonroofs, turbos (and intercooler packaging), 5-speed automatics with steering wheel controls, and on and on.
If you don't like modern cars then fine... Don't buy them. But don't hobble Saab and annoy the rest of us with your retro wishes that will never come true.
If you want an old car, buy one and try and keep the tin worm away from it. In the meantime, Saab has to stay competitive with the rest of the car makers...
