Hmmm, this is news to me. I think we can drive and buy what we like, We don't have too many imported cars because of the cost ie $1Aust = $0.65 American. Makes US cars very expensive. Oh yeah we also drive on the right (left) hand side of the road, thus US cars are less likely to be converted and sold over ere.
Most of the cars you would have seen would have been Ford Falcons and Holden (General Motors) Commodors. The police almost exclusively drive Comodore's and Falcons, some of the V8 variety. The Holden Comodore is sold here with the V8 GenIII 255kw engine (of American design). If you see a largish police 4wd it is almost guaranteed to be a Toyota Landcruiser.
Commodores and Falcons are 6 or 8 cylinder rear wheel drive cars, not too bad on performance and quality either. The remainder of the cars you saw were probably Hyundai Excells, Ford Lasers, Mitsubishi Magnas, Lancers and a selection of Toyotas. Saabs are relatively rare. However WRX's are kind of common as they have been sold over ere for years.....
Apparently you guys may be getting our two door version of the V8 commodore, otherwise known as the Monaro. Keep an eye out for it.
