Silly question, but who do you have now for auto insurance?
Most insurance companies are licensed to sell in all states. I could see a difference west coast-east coast, but a company doing business in Mass should probably do business in CT. Yes, you may end up changing agents, but your present company can probably give you the name of an agent in Manchester or Hartford. Don't confuse agent with insurance company - that's like assuming the local dealer not only sells Saabs, he makes them, too.
Still, it wouldn't hurt to get some quotes, and your insurance will change some changing states - different requirements, minimums, location, location, and location. Choose a few big names - Metropolitan, Northwestern, Progressive, Allstate, etc, and give them a call. They'll give you a quote.
If you're changing jobs, ask your new employer if they have a deal with anyone. The company I work for has a group deal with Metropolitan, so my auto rates are so much lower with them that the other companies' quotes are laughable.
A lot depends on driving record. If you have a good record and few claims, most big places will be glad to do business with you. Lots of claims or a not-so-stellar record, and you might end up with some of the off-brand local companies. And they really aren't companies - they're brokers that deal with second-tier insurance companies.
If you're going to be buying a house, or renting, you're going to need homeowners or renter's insurance. Many insurance companies will work a deal if you get all your insurance through them.
