it was exciting to see someone, in a car much like one you could buy down at the dealer, defy all normal senses of behavior and hurtle around the asphalt at unheard of speeds. Special venue's were created and soon it was a great spectacle, demostrating ingenuity and daring only found on the cutting/bleeding edge of any field of endeavor.

Sadly over the past 40 years most of this was lost and we are left with monotonous drone of a marketing engine that hasn't a clue what makes good racing and instead tittilates with spectacular crashes that often end up with serious injury or death.

NASCAR or what I used to think of as "stock car" racing is an insult to intelligence. Instead of promoting competition where teams can win by innovation, they instead force non-competition of man and machine by creating a techinical level playing field, would this silyness work in any other "sport" ( not that car racing is a real sport, rather a competition)... what if the PGA had tournaments based on handicap, where no one could depend on their own skill to win, but of a system that attempts to make all equal base don the past... why not make all NBA players the same hieght... and we can add weights to all NFL players to make them weigh the same...

All this thinking comes about watching a 1971 Car and Driver show about stock car racing.. .it was dirty, hot, hard and it was real... It is interesting, even now, and they are running in circles.. it is interesting some 30 years later because it had substance.. substance that shows through even 30 years later... its the bleeding edge that ipresses and makes it exciting.. its tthat taking a car of the showroom and making it do more than the designers intended..
