I agree, but Traction Control is a big plus. I don't think it was standard on 99. Chassis and steering improvements are also very interesting. I have not tried the 02, but on paper, the improvements address the (minor) shortcomings I observed on my 01.
I think leasing is a better alternative if you have a low residual. Surely you are getting a better financing rate on the lease. Also, in the USA, your scheduled maintenance is included on the new car! In four years you have the option to buy an improved car, which you will know perfectly. Another point, if you are talking about lpt model, I much prefer the 185 hp than the 170 hp version BUT you can chip the 170 to 200 hp through Saab, which is not possible on 185, to my great disappointment.
I don't think your choice is that hard if you look at every aspect carefully.
