As a field biologist who studies, among other things, bats, I would suggest just closing the door to whatever room the little guy is in .... open the windows and he/she will fly out when things quiet down. As you probably know, bats are harmless to humans (with few exceptions) and will not "fly into your hair". If you choose lethal approaches you will have to remove blood, shot, scratch marks, etc. from your walls - but you will have that superior feeling that comes from killing a 2 ounce animal that has no food value!
By the way, installing bat "houses" on your property dramatically reduces the insect load around your house without having to resort to pesticides or foul-smelling combustibles (see Bat Conservation International website). Bats are everywhere - and the fact that we so rarely encounter them suggests that their encounters with us are accidental. Our lab studies critters people love to hate: coyotes, crows, white. tailed deer etc.
Good luck
Eric
