I think that 56K modems are becoming the exception. I just looked through my Best Buys weekly mailer, and every single new computer comes with a 10/100 NIC instead of a modem. I really expected an even split.
The fax service idea sends the fax through your ISP, just like an email and like efax.com as shown above. It doesn't need to go out and back through the phone line. Besides, if you're talking on the phone you can use DSL on it concurrently, but if you need to send or get a fax, you either need to hang up or have another phone line.
I use efax.com to recieve faxes, but I use their free service, which by chance got me a fax number out of state. Fine for far away faxes, but long distance for anyone local. The free version only recieves, but for $10 per month you can also send and you may get a local number, depending on your location. But that's an extra $10 or more per month :(
I think it is a matter of time before Microsoft or someone who wants to sell the solution to MS will develop this. It makes it nice because you would be able to fax to another person's computer Digitally, In Color, With Attachments, and with a few other improvements. Maybe they could even integrate it with OnStar ;) -JerryC
