Back in the 900/9000 days, people typically bought a car. They purchased it for its combination of safety, performance, and utility. Saabs uniquely packaged all these traits into one great automobile.
But these days 70+% of Saabs are leased. The doctors, lawyers, and Indian chiefs who lease them are looking for prestige, status, comfort, and, possibly, safety. They are looking for the sweet lease deal that many times their company picks up. These folks are NOT looking for a $40K car that can also haul a sofa. They want the latest vehicle that they can show off to their "friends". In three years, they ditch it for the next luxo car.
So Saab sells what these leasees want. And Saab hopes that in three years, the leasee will want another Saab. That's the way Mercedes, BMW, Lexus, Infiniti, and Volvo all make profit. Saab doesn't make an awful lot of profit from the true believers (like myself) who buy a Saab, then run it for 200K+ miles over a period of 10+ years. In that period of time, the leasee has leased four vehicles.
Back in the early 90's, Saab was selling 'pure' Saabs with hatchbacks. And they essentially went out of business as an independent company by doing so.
