IMHO both these products are not so good for the car... I used to have a California Duster but a bodyshop guy told me to stop using it, as it scratches the paint and wears the clearcoat. Looking at the roof of my SPG, I do agree - there are millions of tiny scratches in the roof that you can only see in just the right light. I tossed mine...
His advice was to wax the car four times a year with something good (he recommends 3M, I totally agree) and just hose it off when it gets dusty. So far, that's worked quite well.... the 3M Paste Wav (think that's what it's called) lasts an easy three months and has a UV protectant in it - hopefully that's doing it's job.
As for chamois, try to find a thing called "The Absorber." It's a synthetic chamois-like cloth, quite soft, and holds a TON of water. It may be a relative of neoprene - feels kinda like it. Anyway, works wonders, doesn't scratch paint, and not nearly as frustrating as the real thing.
