Cliff notes: Uhaul did not make me happy.
So I needed to move this past week. I priced out some trucks for a one way rental, Penske was $500, Uhaul came in at $150. How could I pass that up right? Well now I know why it was $350 cheaper, here's the list of things that should have been fixed BEFORE I took the truck, hell they probably should have been fixed years ago.
Truck= 14' Ford Diesel of unknown vintage (prob 80's)
1. Blinkers= non existent, I couldn't even get them to light up.
2. Brake Lights= (4 total 2 per side) the two on the left worked.
3. Hay-wire= When I hit the brakes the front left turn signal lit up as did the blinky arrow on the dash.
4. Brakes= Felt "flintstonish on hard stops" i.e. no power boost
5. A/C= Door said A/C but it was blowing air that was actually hotter than the ambient air (about 97)
6. Gas guage= Said 1/4 tank when I ran out of diesel (luckily as I rolled into the parking spot for the night)
7. Transmission= No top gear (unless I'm supposed to bounce off the rev limiter on the highway (only 72 mph)
Customer Service
1. Waited 1.5 hours AFTER my reservation to even SEE a truck
2. Called from 8:30AM on to try and talk to a HUMAN (return 800 number, customer service, emergency hotline) finally TALK to someone at 1PM! I told her that I needed to return the truck and it would not start. She asked me if I knew how to start a diesel, I said yes (I read the visor sticker). I said the gauge says 1/4 tank left. She tells me "it's probably out of fuel."
If this is so common why not simply repair the gauges or TELL people that they might be wrong?
3. Had to leave to go to wedding (planned to leave at 1pm) told first HUMAN (from the return hotline) I talked to this, she informed me that I could drop the key at the UHAUL office and call her back to let her know which one.
4. New lady calls me back (from Emergency hotline) to confirm a mechanic is on the way. I tell her that I am about to drop the key at Uhaul (I was stading in the office) she tells me "No, you listen to me: This is the program." I say, "I have to leave now, I have a wedding to get to." "If you leave you'll be charged abandonment fees." Very unpleasant lady, so I in turn become unpleasant. "Fine I will be waiting at the truck, have the mechanic call me on my cell phone."
A few calls made in between.
2:20 mechanic arrives, adds 5 gallons of diesel and bam it fires right up. Funny thing is the gas gauge now reads 1/2 full. I go to gas station and put in about $12 worth and now the gauge reads FULL! Return the truck 3 hours late with extra miles, but they left me off without extra fees. Thank god for small favors!
Moral of the story is you get what you pay for, next timew I'll spend the $500 for a Penske truck or something else.
Thought I'd vent, now to right that complaint letter....
