To clear up my position, I too agree that there is room for all 3 drive types within the market. It is just that I am seeing a trend back to RWD - this coming from a at least 2 decades where RWD cars were portrayed as bad and unruly.
While most of your comments are accurate, many are just wrong. Did you forget about the Cadillac CTS? Or how about the new GTO coming over shortly from Holden in Australia? GM is slowly edging back to RWD.
As for the comment about the average driver not wanting to lug around am extra 200lb for AWD - how many average drivers would actually be able to tell the difference? Plus, with the higher output engines thse days, does it really make a difference (i.e. - .5 sec slower 0-60mph, can you really discern this difference???).
Also, there are several vehicles under $24K that have AWD - notably the Vibe/Matrix twins. I guarantee if AWD or RWD were offered in more vehicles below $24K, people would buy them. The simple fact is that currently these configurations are reserved for costlier vehicles. As with anything, the price will come down and we will start to see them across the board.
I do agree that the "big 3" are predominantly producing FWD cars currently but I think they will come around as soon as they start playing catch up with the "imports".
