All of the major mags this month have "first drive" reviews of the new 9-3. None of them got their hands on the 2.0T 210hp version, however they all comment on the 2.0t 175 hp version.
I wasn't surprised by the positive reviews, however I am extremely surprised to see the 0-60 times. Motor Trend achieved 0-60 in 7.2 secs with the manual with the 2.0t 175 hp version. Automobile achieved a 7.3, and excited me even more when they explained that the 2.0T 210hp should have no problem breaking 7 seconds by a significant margin. I think that statement makes sense, consider the following:
* The Cadillac CTS, at 3500 lbs, reaches 0-60 in 6.9 seconds. It features a five speed tranny mated to a 220hp/210 torque engine.
* The Acura RSX S-type, with only 200hp, reaches 60 in 6.1 seconds, according to Car & Driver. This car features a six speed manual, with very close ratios, like the 2003 9-3 SS, and weighs 2700lbs.
The Saab 9-3 SS weighs a little over 3000 lbs. It has a six speed, closely matched ratios, and has about the same power output as the CTS, plus a T4 turbo. My guess is that the 9-3 SS 2.0T 210 hp version will see 60mph in about 6.5 secs, a bit quicker than the Viggen. Keep in mind, once you go over 70mph I'm sure the Viggen will eat up the 2.0T 9-3. But to 60mph the new 9-3, with its lack of turbo lag and lack or torque steer, will stick to the ground and bite much harder than an out of control Viggen off the line.
I am extremely excited about this! With a little over a year to go on my 9-3 convertible lease, and the hype I've been hearing about how damn beautiful the convertible will be, now that it seems the 9-3 SS will be quicker than we initially assumed, the G35 seems like it will no longer be the only option on my convertible list!
Your thoughts, fellow Saabers?
