Saab's reliability has been improving, but your cars sound atypical. Saab's biggest problems have been its transmissions and its dealer network. The old trannies were pretty average, meaning replacement of a manual unit after 150K miles or so. Keep in mind that many cars don't reach this mileage anyway. I get a sense that some of the Saab reliability griping has to do with the fact that we try to drive these cars well past the 250K mile mark, and about the only thing that doesn't wear out in Saabs at that mileage is the engine.
As for the dealer network, if a certified Saab mechanic can't find and fix a car's problem, this often gets blamed on the Saab being a lousy car. What allows us to drive Saabs to high mileage is preventative maintenance and accurate diagnosis of problems.
So whether you get a 9-3 or 9-5, you might delve a little more into why your car was towed 5 times in a year.
As far as which is more reliable, I would guess your aim is to avoid repeating your previous experience. However, your reliability problems with the old generation 900 were so unusual that I don't think this is necessarily the issue.
But if I had to choose, I'd say 9-5, unless you needed the hatchback. Better transmission and safer chassis.
