You are using it as a variable resistor. One lead (either 5 volts or aux in, doesn't matter in this application) goes to the center post. The other lead from the ECU goes to one of the outside connections. If turning the knob has the opposite effect you expect, use the other outside connection. If it ends up being to sensitive to small inputs, or only works in a small amount of the total rotation, use a resistor closer to the 5 ohms specified. I think what you need to do now is measure the voltage at the aux input as you turn the resistor through its range.
