Not sure, but I do remember reading somewhere that SAAB has an alliance with Mobil, and that they sell relabeled Mobil 1 on the other side of the pond, while in the US, they sell relabeled Mobil semi-synth... Someone once posted that Mobil 1 is the factory fill for SAAB engines, but I haven't been able to verify that anywhere. It sorta does smell like Mobil 1, though.
It's interesting that SAAB specifies A3/B3 spec oil for the latest 9-5, but then their semi-synthetic stuff doesn't meet that standard, nor does Mobil 1 in 0W-30, 5W-30, 10W-30, or 15W-50.
Only Mobil 1 0W-40 "European Car Formula" meets A3/B3 spec. I came across another brand, it might have been Quaker State or Pennzoil synthetic, in a 5W-40 that meets A3/B3. I plan on using Mobil 1 0W-40, not only because it meets A3/B3, but also because it meets the tough MB 229.3 standard.
BMW Synthetic Oil in 5W-30 also meets A3/B3, and many BMW dealers sell this for less than $4/quart. It's actually a relabeled Castrol product (NOT SYNTEC) which is unavailable in the U.S. as a Castrol-branded product. Our 2000 528i uses this stuff, and as per the car's onboard computer, its oil change interval is 15,000 miles.
If you want to go totally overboard, there's a BMW 10W-60 synthetic oil available, which is for the M3!
