WWII had just started when I reached scouting age, and most of my "Scout"
training was done by the military. I served in the "Junior Marine Corps"
when i was 12. Two Marines from Guadalcanal who were on recruiting duty in
my home town taught us close order drill and how to stand at attention. I
I too, have always relied on the courage, good sense and role models the WWII Vets gave to me and still do. I would have liked to join the Civil Air
Patrol, but was not close enought to a unit to do so. I spent 5 1/2 years in the Kansas National Guard just as the 35th Division was deactivated and
sent home from Europe and their last battle at the Remagen Bridge in Germany. When Korea came along, I went active and went through Basic, Leaders Course and OCS at Ft. Belvoir Va., Now, in the sunset of my years
hate to see the Knocks Scouting has taken, and wish I could pass along some
of my useless training like compass reading, and to sharpen my own survival skills among younger ones. But they dont allow that in Sunday School! I hate the "Politically Correct" emphasis that has become law. It reminds me of Hitlers Youth Corps.
