A turbo runs on energy that is available for use in exhaust gasses, not on the motion of gasses being expelded from the cylinder. Back pressure is increased very slightly by turboing an engine, exhaust temperature goes up a lot. At a glance it would seem like the piston pushing the spent gasses out is what spools the turbo, but that is not the case. A turbo runs by completing combustion that does not have the energy to move a piston in acceleration, but has the energy to spin a wheel. A piston is accelerating only during the first half of its travel, it is slowing down during the second half of its travel. A wheel has a more constant rate, it does not reverse motion, it just goes faster or slower. The acceleration/deceleration storage componant of a pistons energy is negated when it changes direction, while a wheel (turbine)can store this energy and build on it. thats why an internal combustion engine can change RPM quickly and a rotating enginge can produce higher levals for a longer term after it gets there.
