How patient are you? Many dealerships promote from within. Porter or quick lube tech, apprentice, journeyman. Entry pay for a porter or quick lube tech can be pretty meager, but most dealerships will promote bright people from within. Any technical experience, community college or private trade school shows intitiative. Your skill and knowlege is probably more important that the price of the school you attend, but $20k for schooling, well that would be cheap for a private college of any kind. You don't say how old you are and whether what schooling you've completed. I've seen some driveway mechanics with a pretty penny invested in tools and boxes.
Talk to the service manager at your favorite local dealership and ask him what he's looking for. Good techs can make $100k a year. How 'bout a body shop? A skilled painter makes even more.
Smog techs are very valuable.
Wrenching is commission, dirty and it's just you and the car, is that your style? There's also being a service advisor, parts guy and lots of entry level driver and cashier positions in both.
Lot's of independent auto centers and tire centers, Goodyear, Sears, gas stations, etc., although the best money is made by line mechanics at major dealers. Municipalities, and governments in general fix a lot of cars, trucks and busses and all have entry level positions.
There's also sales and finance, truly controlled by your ambition.
