Most likely: is your hard drive filling up? Assuming you are using windows, you might be consistently maxing out your RAM and now that your HD space is starting to fill up, it is making a bunch of racket as the OS "swaps" looking for HD space to use for "virtual memory". Windows needs A LOT of memory. For example, windows 2k recomends 128mb RAM, but thats just the RAM the OS need, if you run other applications, they have their own RAM needs. So if you only have 128mb, then you'll be using lots virtual memory to run your other applications.
You can get more RAM or a bigger HD, if you want. Or you can do some cleaning on your HD. Its probably not harmful, but it can be annoying. If it starts to cry or squeal, however, I'd back up asap and start looking for a new one.
Either way you should always be backing up your HD, like you would change your oil, at regular intervals - its basic maintenance. :)
