I'd have to aqree w. MJP; Someone tried a "Denial of Service" attack on the "Root" DNS servers, but virtually all ISPs have chaching turned on for the most requested sites or addresses. Even if they were able to crash name resolution on all 13 servers the Internet community as a whole wouldn't notice until the "time-to-live, TTL" period has expired for all the chached lookups (TTL = the length of time in minutes that a previously requested address is stored for future use), or until the local DNS servers at all the ISPs scavenged their stale records.
A more worrisome senario would be if they could some how spoof a zone transfer (records update) that was empty, or completely garbled. Pointing every IP address in the world to a specific porn site comes to mind....
