With IDE, the only thing that matters is that one drive is configured for Master (ID0) and the other for Slave (ID1). In general, you want the fastest drive as Master and the slower drive as Slave. Do not use Cable Select unless the cable you have specifically says to do so. As far as drivers go, it doesn't matter how the drive is configured - a driver will search the IDE bus (all of them, if more than one) and find what it's looking for. Just know that if you're moving from ATA to ATA33/66/100/133 Windows 9x may get confused, and reinstallation may be the only option.
