My brother has an Impreza, and it was making a mighty sound in the rear due to the lockup between the front and rear drivetrains. Since this is electrically controlled, you can pull a fuse and drop the car into FWD mode only. (Check the manual). This made the noise go away, along with any drive to the rear wheels. Of course, "Subaru, with Full Time Front Wheel Drive" just doesn't have that same ring to it.
He has looked into fixing it, and replacing the part will be on the order of $1,000. This may not be the same part, but I suspect it might be. I'm not sure how to determine if this car is driving the rear wheels, but check to see if the fuse is there, or if there, blown.
