What type of router and what type of cable modem? Does the router have multiple ports in it or not? Where did it comes from?
Chances are that the connection between your laptop and router is with a "crossover" cable, aka a "null ethernet" cable. The two pins for TX and RX on one are reversed. What you will probably want to do is rewire the ethernet jacks in this null configuration. You can also get yourself a cheap hub, plug the router into the UPLINK port on the hub, then your 150' cable into one of the other jacks. You can locate the hub by the router or in the office, whichever you prefer.
