The 330ix is a nice car for casual driving, and since your mom doesn't drive it like an enthusiast she'll probably think it is fine. I spent a couple hours in one out in Utah this past April (They had demo cars at the hotel as a promotion) and found it to handle great, amazing brakes, good seat comfort, super fit and finish---but quite underpowered. Maybe it was the altitude (6500 to 7000 feet) but while it went OK, it seemed to be on a par with a non-turbo 9-3 or at best a low-pressure 9-5. It seemed kinda gutless--not at all what I expected.
DK about the AWD system as I only had it on dry roads.
For AWD, I'get an Audi before anything else. MB 4-Matics have always been troublesome, but I hear the newer ones are much improved.
