Not only for weird happenings like that, but also, heaven forbid, if you should find yourself to be in an accident. In the following story, I'm not exactly sure why the guy took pictures (we had a full police report, anyway) but I guess it's a good idea.
I was driving in thick stop-and-go traffic on the Grand Central Parkway in my old Honda, when this guy in a Ford Ranger pickup rear-ends my car! Surprisingly, the damage to my car was minimal, but the Ranger was really smashed. Anyhow, we pull over, I call for a police officer, and when he arrives, he's really pissed at the guy in the pickup, because it's clearly a commercial work vehicle loaded with work gear, albeit with passenger car plates. (Commercial vehicles are banned on the GCP)
So the police officer starts giving the guy tickets left and right, ie, tailgating, commercial vehicle on GCP, reckless driving, etc! The guy in the Ranger then whips out a dispoable camera and says to me, "I'm gonna take pictures so I have proof!!"
So I'm like, "Uh, okay, *you* hit ME?? Feel free, snap away!!" The cop gets even more irritated and lectures the guy for probably another half-hour, pointing out all the compact pickup trucks and cargo vans on the parkway which shouldn't be using the parkway. The officer told me I could leave early... "OK, later guys," I thought to myself, also wondering if the situation was gonna get uglier.
Eventually I went to get an estimate, and it was around $500. Insurance sent me a check for around that much, but I didn't bother getting it fixed, because the damage was so minimal. The Honda was leased, and they only docked me $300 for the damage when I turned in the car, so I actually wound up making a little money from the situation!
