We are paying off my wifes student loans of $15,000. Not a problem at all. There is good debt and bad debt, about the only good debt is student loans (leading to a higher paying job) and a house that appreciates. Think of it this way, a $15K loan at 6.75% is $142 a month. That's like your long distance phone bill some months. You can handle that for a higher salary, right? To top that off, student loan payments generally begin a *year* after graduation. If you don't have a job then, you can defer. If you're in undergrad now and decide to continue to grad school, you defer your payments until you are a year out of grad school. A final note, without the better college degree, lets say you come out making $35K. With the better college/program/major/degree, you can make $50K. Barring taxes, you have essentially covered your education in one years' salary and have the rest of your life to enjoy an elevated income. Just my take on the matter.
