OT: New car for the mother in law...

I seem to be the car afficianado in the family, so I've been asked for my opinion about a new car for my Mother in Law. She's got a fairly tight parking space, so it'll probably be a compact. She wants something her golden retriever will fit into the back of and I'm assuming that she wants something which doesn't require much in the way of maintenance (gas and oil changes only would be nice) She'll probably lease.
She said she liked the Subaru Forester and the Jetta wagon...
I'm thinking she should also check out a Saturn wagon, Maybe a Mitsubishi (they're new in Canada- any opinions on them?)
I think she'd be looking in a similar price range as the cars mentioned above (around 30K Canadian) She might spend more for the right car.
I'd like to suggest she get a 9-3 wagon (there's not a huge rush on this), but I'm hesitant to recommend a Saab as its probably a bit more than she wants to spend and it seems that they require more maintenance than the average car. (And I wouldn't buy a first model year of ANY car!)
Anyone else have some suggestions? why do you suggest that?
