OT: VW oil condition question Posted by andy [Email] ![]() ![]() |
I'm at my brother's house and was checking over his 98 Jetta with 70,000 miles and we noticed a tan colored gel like goop inside the rocker cover cap and on the inside of the rocker cover. It is obviously oil mixed with water. There was actually quite a bit of it, we cleaned it out with a rag, it was around the cap and on the upper inside of the rocker cover, but not down on the plastic shield covering the cam.
My first guess, as owner of a 92 900S, is a leaking head gasket, but the dipstick is free of this stuff and shows only oil as it should. The engine does not use water/coolant that would indicate a leak. My guess is that the oil cap is vented and is accumulating moisture during warm up/cool down cycles. I had VW's years ago and remember something like this being an issue but never a serious problem. Am i right? Should we change the valve cover gasket and assume its a minor problem?
Thanks to all in advance.
