Well, my source info reads,
[1965] "Although Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolaget had long been known as Saab, it was impractical to use one name while being known by another. Furthermore, the original name no longer described all of the Company's activities. The National Patent and Registration Office was, therefore, advised of the Company's intention of changing it's name to SAAB Aktiebolag."

And now, the supposition:
Throughout this book the company is referred to as "Saab". They even quote a newspaper headline from 1940 as reading, "Saab gets a flying start!". I suppose it's only natural; we tend to do this with other acronyms as well, right? Laser, snafu, maybe even Jeep? (And this doesn't include turning non-acronym company names into everyday words, like Kleenex & Xerox.) Since the acronym "SAAB" is also a pronounceable word, I'm sure it was converted to "Saab" almost immediately. You just can't do that with BMW, so it becomes "Bimmer" instead. And VW becomes "Veedub". And Rolls Royce becomes "Roller". And so on...

P.S.,
The book later goes on to say that the separating out of the Automotive Division came about in 1970, after the proposed 1968 merger with Scania-Vabis. The merger was approved by both companies in 1969, & the Division separation was done at the same time as the name change filing (from SAAB Aktiebolag to SAAB-SCANIA Aktiebolag). This new Division would include both cars & trucks.

Then, in 1972, the Swedish courts finally approved the merger. The Automotive Division was futher separated at this time, into the Scania Division & the Saab Car Division.
