I disagree. I've liked it from the very beginning, when I saw it on a business trip to Germany the day before 9/11.
The design is very conscious of the interest a lot of people have in pulling up retro designs, except this time BMW did not settle for a re-design of their old cars, a la the Beetle or the horrible T-bird, but instead chose desgin inspirations from decorative arts of the, to me anyway, early twentieth century. The new 7s curves and proportions are akin to forward thinking though still ornate designs of Viennese designers of 1910 to 1930. The car is also pretty reminiscent of somethings that might have come out of the early 20th century Tiffany studios. But, at the same time, it still manages to add that odd severity that the Germans have almost become caricatures of. This blend of differents I think is especially contemporary in its sentiment, clearly following the lead of late twentieth century architects and decorative arts. This same kind of approach has always made Saabs, particularly in the 1980s, both reto and modern all at the same time.
So, in the end, I think the BMW 7 design is overall very appealing, and it is even more so given that it has tremendous presence in person. In fact, the car is rather sinister looking!
