Sorry, but higher education in MA is under serious attack right now.
Not that it's ever been easy to get funding from the pol's! But at
the moment, funding for contracts that were settled/negotiated
last year are in jeopardy. All across the state the state college
system is in serious trouble because of underfunding and penny-
pinching. You see, many pol's think that education should be
like any business: free marketeers have foisted their idiocy onto
public service. However, your question as to what one needs to
teach in higher ed': at the minimum, a masters' degree. In some
subjects, one is required to have a 'terminal' or ph d. I taught
in a 2 year 'temporary' position with only a masters' - but it was
in mathematics. Math teachers are very hard to come by - I would
suspect mostly because the pay for teaching math is so low.
Let's face it, most bright kids are pragmatic - they go where the
money is. I think this explains, more than anything, why so many
go into law, than teaching. Anyway, a person with a good background
with applied math should have no difficulties teaching undergraduates, and even some graduates. I imagine the
same would go with advanced degrees in any of the sciences or
engineering. However, with the social sciences, I don't think I've
ever seen/met a person in higher ed' that didn't have a ph d.
I would recommend the work to anyone - it's the politics that
surround it that is so discouraging!
