I bought a 3hp 15 gallon from sears and paid about $200, I bet you could grab the same one for cheaper in the new year. It was the right size to be portable and fit in small places, but not be to small and constantly need to pump. Torque is really a matter of the gun, not the compressor, but the amount of hp of the pump the dictates how quickly it can fill the tank and the size of the tank dictates how much it can reserve between the time that the pump is running. Technically if you had a .5 hp 1 gallon roofing compressor you could use a 500 ft lb torque gun, you just may have to wait five minute between each bolt. I decided that 3hp 15 gallon was a good balance for me, and I haven't used it enough to be proven wrong yet.
Also I've been buying used tools from a friend who's a mechanic, if you want I can if he's got more stuff. I'd rather spend $70 on a used mac air wrench than a brand new sears one (not that sears tools are all that bad)
Hope this helps,
Chad
