Hey Matt,

I live in Henrietta and I can only make recommendations based on experience.

First, "good and cheap" is an oxymoron. Like everything else, you get what you pay for. I've always tried to find an HONEST mechanic. I have no problem paying someone who's honest, takes pride in their work, and perhaps is a bit of an enthusiast.

Having said that, here's my assessment of the area;

1. Dorschel is out. They are very expensive and generally could care less about you as a customer. Their main priority is volume. On the positive side, they have master mechanics on staff . . . whether you're car gets the master mechanic or not is up to their discretion.

2. Impact motors of East Rochester seems to be very good. They are almost all Saab (but handle Volvo as well). Their quote for a 60K major on my 9-3 turned out to be MORE expensive than the dealer though. However, the guy I spoke with went out of his way to explain to me how they get ALL of the tranny and brake fluid out . . . very thorough and I would trust the quality of the work.

3. Schoen Place in Pittsford predominantly sells used cars. However, they won the bid for my 60K tune up mainly because of price and because they seem to care a great deal about Saabs. Well, I was plesently surprised at the quality of the work. Granted changing fluids and plugs is not THAT difficult, but they actually painted by lugs! and calipers! back to the original silver. Nice touch. Their per hour rate is reasonable for Saab standards. I cannot however comment on their ability to perform the BIG jobs or their familiarity with all Saab models.

You're stuck with an car that's relatively expensive to repair. I would start with Schoen and reserver Dorschel or Impact for the technically challenging jobs.

Hope that helps
