On Dec 28 our nineteen year son learned just how unpredictable whitetail deer can be. After midnight in darkness as he approached the entrance to our street, a deer appeared along side the 95 SAAB Aero the he was driving.
The Saab was traveling at 40-45 mph. The deer ran along side the passenger door then cut across the nose of the SAAB. Our son turned left and drove off road . Once off the road he was into snow 6-8 inches deep. In the deep snow the SAAB slid 50 ft and struck a tree head on. Both air bags deployed and the entire nose crushed in. The impact resulted in one broken leg and a totaled vehicle.
The tree was about 15 inches in diameter. The police, the EMS crew and citizens at the scene could not believe that he was not crushed. The SAAB had almost no damage beyond the nose. Except for the broken leg, he could have opened the door and walked away.
