A heater box is a hefty repair out of warranty. There is a guy on the 9-3 board who did it himself (search heater box on 9-3 board) and it took him about 8 hrs he said. It involves disassembling the dash etc. I'm guessing at least 6 or 7 hundred bucks from a dealer to do it. My heater box just broke for the 2nd time, though it's the other knob now (dealer did the cheap fix under warranty, now it's out of warranty - time for the cheap fix again). If you are buying from a dealer ask to see the history of the vehicle (any receipts etc). And if he tells you his automatic SE has 200hp, you must laugh at him and walk out the door because that is a LIE!!!!!!!!!!
