I suppose you have a point about the price, I realize the Miata is more money than the Neon. What I actually had in mind when I posted was one which was a few years old. Of course, adding a turbocharger (or supercharger) will add to the cost and you'll want to beef up the drivetrain too as you mentioned. I belive that if you started with a mid nineties Miata, rebuilt the engine to accomodate the turbo, replaced the clutch, and upgraded the wheels and exhaust you'd be in the same ballpark price range. I had a Miata for a couple of years and I agree with you on the looks- but I found that a nicer set of wheels (which helps out a great deal in the handling department anyways) made the car look much more masculine- add the turbo and most folks will only see your nice exhaust system anyways! I like the look of the latest generation, reminds me of the RX7 gen3- a car I always wanted, but ended up making a more practical choice (Aero wagon) once I could actually afford one. Durability and reliability? I've got a friend with a 1990 Miata to which he added a supercharger and runs about 7psi boost. The car still runs like new and can keep up with the big boys. Of course, owning a car like that requires more maintenance and general effort on the owner's part (like the original mods), but you end up with a great sleeper car that's different than most others on the road. If all you want to do is put your money down and drive away with a full warranty then I'll agree that the Neon (or maybe a Mazdaspeed Miata in the near future?) would be a better choice. I don't like the idea of an s2000- with only what- 150ft-lbs? of torque and a high redline I think it would be tiring to drive it at 8000RPM all day to get the performance its capable of.
