I'm opposed to frivolous lawsuits. If somebody loses fingers picking up a running lawnmower to trim his hedges that's not the fault of the lawnmower manufacturer or dealer.
If somebody supplies explosives, guns, anthrax spores, or a motor vehicle to somebody who they know is not legally permitted to posess those items and they are used in a crime the supplier should be held responsible.
If the gun shop did sell the weapon ilegally, ie: to a convicted felon or didn't follow the laws regarding licensing or waiting periods the gun shop owner is partially at fault. I'm not sure about the manufacturer.
It's the same as a bar continuing to serve an obviously drunk patron. They should be held partially responsible for the damage caused by the drunk driver.
We should be held responsible for our actions. Selling a gun ilegally that is later used in a crime is a contributing action.
