Hi,
IIRC, turbo-charging was invented to allow internal combustion engine
to breathe better at high altitude for air-planes. Then, they noticed
the tremendous power of the exhaust and minimal maintenance requirements
of turbo and decided to eliminate the troublesome cylinder and piston
and basically propel the air-plane forward with just the power of the
exhaust gases. That is how the jet engine was born and the reason why
jet-engines are called turbos also.
Yup, engines are air pumps, and engines with turbos can be tweaked much
better than Naturally aspirated engines. Also, Saabs are built with
indestructible four cylinder engines which can take 20psi boost without
problems and transmissions (with the exception of old troublesome
Automatics) which are built to handle diesel torque.
So, if you want a car that can be modified, don't look at a BMW!!! :-)
Buy a Saab.
thanks
Jae
