The driver was a 22 year old fellow (not that that makes him stupid or anything) and I think a more experienced driver would have put together the fact that my reverse lights were on, my car was running, and I was behind the wheel (it was nighttime) with the high probability that I was in the act of backing up!
One could also argue that anyone that does not look behind as they are backing up deserves what happens. Mike Lynch, b.flippo, and Jetplate make that case pretty well.
I did call the dealer and talked to the service manager I had dealt with for my wife's car - just asked him what had happened since Friday night. He tried to find out and "could find no one who knew anything" and gave me a hint that it was possible I might never hear anything about it. Without saying it directly, it sounded as if the dealer might fix the dent himself at no charge to me. I could only imagine that result if it turned out the dent was repairable without the use of a new door panel.
I'll let you all know what happens.
