Yep. Your instincts are where I would first focus. We had an 88 S-10 Balzer with the 4.0. When ours lost accelration like that I replaced the plugs and wires and a hose or two that looked worn (1993) -- essentially performed a tune-up. Sure enough that fixed the problem until the next thing went wrong. The other area you might check is the fuel line. That truck was problematic after 60K miles. My Dad eventially ditched it for a Ford Explorer.
I don't miss that truck, but it did get us to the slopes when we needed it!
