Don't kid yourself- ALL of the major automakers get their components from Tier one suppliers. The same people designing parts for our Saabs are designing parts for the new Cavalier... or the new Focus... or the new Accord.
Since the same people are designing parts for every brand, the main brand differentiation comes with the companies performance requirements, and ultimately, what they're willing to spend on a part. That's the main problem with most North American cars these days IMO- The suppliers specialize in the components they produce and they can provide the best solution, but only if the customer (GM, in our case) is willing to spend the development and piece price costs to have it.
Don't start thinking you get what you pay for though. True, given a production run of 1 part, the more expensive of the two typically would be the better performing part (assuming competent design) When you consider that some parts are inevitably higher volume, the economies of scale involved might make the cheaper part the better one. Lets say those A/C outlets cost $6.00 each. $6X10000 is far less than $6X1000000. But both products will have similar design costs. Its more likely that the automaker will simply pocket the savings, but theoretically, with a higher production, they could provide a better product for the same price.
