drive more defensively.
I've owned 3 trucks, an SUV, and a conversion van over the last 10 years and am convinced that most drivers haven't a clue when it comes to operating them safely. They have higher centers of gravity and are therefore more likely to roll over. They aren't as manueverable. It is much harder to see other vehicles that may be behind, or along side while driving. They tend to require more distance to stop.
I think they've done studies that show the people who suffer the least injury in their vehicles inflict the most. Maybe that's why did I noticed a 1995 Yukon GT overtaking me at 100mph yesterday evening? I had accelerated to 100 briefly to check out my car's ride after having a wheel repaired and rebalanced. I owned a '95 Yukon GT in 1995, and I can tell you, it isn't a vehicle I'd trust at that speed if I had to execute an evasive maneuver. And, as I recall, GM speed-limited them because the Goodyear TD tires they built them with weren't rated for speeds above 95 mph. So, this guy's probably reprogrammed his ECU to allow that kind of speed.
Most of the people driving SUVs and pick-ups started out driving cars and never got the message that these are very different vehicles. There probably ought to be separate training and testing to get licenses to drive them.
