It is the freeplay between the valve and the rocker arm that will allow for expansion as the engine heats up. on pushrod engines and most OHC engines it is adjusted with a setscrew on the rocker arm or actuator. On some directly actuated OHC engines (like the Saab 99 and the Triumph TR7) the lash is adjusted with a shim.
Pushrod engines with hydraulic lifters maintain zero lash with oil pressure.
If there is too much lash you will hear a valve tap.
