Eric:
Just be grateful you were not driving in NC. I was pulled over a couple of Sunday's ago at 7 am on my way to the beach. Not a car on the road besides me ... until I saw the flashing lights of an officer behind me.
I was clocked at 86 in a 70 zone. In NC, more than 15 mph over in a 70 zone is not a traffic offense. It is a criminal misdemeanor. Guilty plea includes a mandatory 30 day (minimum) suspension of license, jail time, 90% increase in insurance for 3 years, etc.
Fortunately, this is my first ever driving offense. I hired a "traffic" attorney that will first try for a non moving violation. If the DA won't buy that, he's confident he can get it reduced to less than 10 above speed limit. I thought of fighting on my own given my record and that I was in a new (to me) '9000 that is infinately quieter than my '900. Without other traffic on the road, I thought I was still at 75 (honestly). But it is not worth the risk. Cost for attorney $200 + $125 court fees.
Needless to say I drove home on cruise control!
