It's my unerstanding that all current Saabs run fine on 87 octane, but many of the models or I should say all except the 9-5 Linear 2.3 LPT recommend 89 or 91 (or even 93) in the gas flap. The lower compression of a turbo motor allows higher octane to be recommended, not required. And the Trionic engine management with Automatic Performance Control cranks up the tuning and boost to improve performance, and some say and I agree, to get better fuel economy too on the higher grade of gas.
We did receive a notice that you can't use "regular" in a 2.0 HOT engine in high altitude applications as regular is reduced to only 85 octane in places like Denver because normally aspirated engines have their compression ratio effectively reduced by high altitude and a HOT engine requires a minimum of 87 everwhere.
